The mission of the Free University Project is to produce directly, or through links, guided independent study materials that can lead to college credit by examination. If you can find a college that will accept these types of credits you can significantly cut your costs and the time necessary to gain your degree/s.

Houston Community College's: ACT Centers offers over 2,000 online courses.

University Alliance
SmartPlanet.com has a host of computer-related classes, both self-study and instructor-led. Some of the self-study courses are provided for free to entice users to sign up for an annual membership ($99.95). Members can sign-up to take as many classes asthey like. Non-members can also take individual
element k
classes for a fee,
typically $19.95 for instructor-led options.

DigitalThink.com, at the other end of the spectrum, slants their courses toward a technically predisposed corporate audience; although anyone can register. Large companies hire them to customize courseware. For individuals, Design and Publishing classes run either $75 or $195.



Searching for Distance-Education Courses


R1.edu.org is a "gateway and searchable index for distance-education courses from 28 major research universities in the U.S. All members have the Research University 1 classification from the Carnegie Foundation and are members of the Association of American Universities."
Western Governors University is a "clearinghouse for distance learning courses from a variety of western universities. Also offers
some degrees and certificate programs of its own but WGU is not yet an accredited institution."
College Learning.com is a "for profit business venture that provides a web portal for distance learning offerings from several hundred colleges and universities internationally. Students are frequently charge an extra service fee when enrolling through College Leaning.com."
