uses the Earth's magnetic field to generate electricity. Just like
you can take a coil of wire and put it alongside high voltage wires
and tap into the electricity without ever touching them, so you can
tap into the magnetic dynamo that gives the earth it's magnetic
field. It just needs a coil and some permanent magnets to get the
electric flow started. The larger the coil, the more electricity can
be extracted.
The drawbacks have to do with the alignment of the coil and where it
is on the earth determines its output. As you get closer to the
magnetic poles, you get more electricity, but actually being on the
magnetic pole would be a dead zone. So, you have a generator that
changes output based on location, which wouldn't be a problem for
households (except that it would require a filter/transformer to try
to make the output common in voltage that would vary by location and
might need to be tunable), but this might be a problem for
automobiles that move around, unless you had batteries that it
simply charged and then the auto got its power from the batteries.
It certainly couldn't be used in airplanes, except maybe as an
auxiliary power source to charge batteries.
Now as far as people trying to calculate how this works and claiming
the first law of thermodynamics is being violated. They never
consider the Earth's magnetic field in their calculations.
All this is consistent with the 12 mile cable experiment that the
shuttle did awhile back. The same principle applies. Just like
stringing
up a cable next to high power lines allows one to "steal" electric
current, so does a cable moving through the magnetic field of the
earth
generates electricity."
